Taste of Edmonton Festival

The Taste of Edmonton Festival

Taste of Edmonton Festival, Edmonton, Alberta

Taste of Edmonton Festival. The past year has given us all a shift in perspective. With the pandemic affecting everybody, there were days when finding a reason to smile was hard! After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, Edmonton’s annual “Taste of Edmonton” festival has returned and it has been nothing short of a lovely experience which reminds us that there is comfort and joy even from the simplest of things.

Who can resist a good feed of a variety of delicious food? We surely weren’t able to. This year’s festival took place at Sir Winston Churchill Square, where the event is usually hosted save for when there was construction being done and due to COVID restrictions. Seeing the activity and people moving about in a relatively normal fashion took us back to the days when we can freely walk around and enjoy the outdoors.

We chose a late afternoon, and the weather was just right—the sunlight streaming through the leaves of the trees that provided shade to the tables below where people enjoyed their food picks. The variety of food seemed endless! Each booth had three or four food items they specialized in and there were somewhere around fifty or sixty booths or food trucks. Some of the more memorable ones we saw and tried included green onion cakes, bratwurst on a stick, ginger beef, butter chicken… the list goes on and on, and the range of flavor profiles offered was amazing!

We walked along the many booths and browsed the different menus while comparing it to our palate and our hunger levels. At times like this, the opportunity to gain a lot of pounds and end up choosing more than you can actually consume presents itself and it can get very tempting to give in. This is where the importance of mindfulness comes in. We surveyed the options and took the opportunity to exchange thoughts with and ask questions to the food vendors before choosing our food carefully. We took our time and slowly worked our way around and sampled whatever struck our fancy. In a conscious effort to try the event’s offerings mindfully, we decided to share single orders which allowed us to try more of the different food available.

Conversing with the food vendors was a part of the whole experience. We asked them about their struggles, what makes them tick, and what they enjoy or not enjoy. A good laugh together always lightens the atmosphere and puts a smile on people’s faces. You’ll find that feeling that smile on your face has such a positive uplifting effect on your mood and can have a lasting impact on your day.

We found that one trip didn’t fully satisfy us so we returned for a second day to complete our rounds. There truly was so much to try, and our second trip allowed us to sample so many more dishes. It was a fabulous way to spend some time together over something we do on a daily basis but was made more special by all the new flavors. The food was great and the company was even better. It’s awesome to be able to take in experiences like this together—relaxed and wholly present in the moment.

How to Decide on Renovations and Upgrades

August 16, 2021/0 Comments/in Latest News /by admin

Renovating or upgrading your multi-property building is exciting! All the refurbishments will make the place feel new and fresh again, and it’s like seeing your property bloom in front of you. However, both renovating and upgrading properties require not just architectural and financial planning but an overarching vision of the bigger picture as well.

Some fall into the trap of wanting to make it into a place they would like to live in, and others don’t care what it looks like as long as it’s habitable. Both are roads to a disaster. It is important to keep in mind that being able to determine the amount of money that should be invested into upgrading a property depends not just on architectural and financial factors, but the human element as well.

What do we mean by this?

It has been my experience that the best question to ask yourself when deciding how much to spend on renovations and upgrades is, “What would be inviting and fitting for a tenant I want to have in my property?”

It is important to choose who you want to have as a tenant and design and maintain the property that reflects that kind of tenant. Do you want small family units or bigger families? Are you looking to attract a younger, trendier crowd or perhaps retirees? The contrast in the latter example shows a clear difference between age-influenced preferences which will affect the type of property upgrades and renovation style (and budget) that you’d ultimately end up doing. By determining who you want to have as a tenant, you will be able to make the corresponding sound decisions on what type of renovations and upgrades to do on your property.

How much to spend on renovations for your investment property with that question in mind will become easier to determine. Bigger families and/or retirees who are more likely to settle for a longer period may be contented with a basic overhaul of the space. Freshened up paint, fully functional HVAC systems, and shiny new doorknobs matched with a quaint curb appeal may suffice. For a younger crowd, a more current style of interiors or perhaps a curb appeal that screams “I’m the place to be” can do the trick. Relative to this, the location will dictate to some extent what your options are. Your property upgrades and renovations should make you stand out from the competition without scaring your target tenants away, so keep in mind how your property will look relative to its surroundings as well.

At the end of the day, your property will be the final arbiter of who will want to live there. ALWAYS keep in mind the person you want as a tenant anytime you are making decisions about what to do with your property, and even where you purchase or build. With a clear “bigger picture vision” of who you want to attract as a tenant, you will have a more defined execution of your property upgrade and/or renovation that will ultimately lead your target tenants to you.

Life Lessons: Rights, Responsibilities, and Repercussions

Life Lessons: Rights, Responsibilities, and Repercussions

August 3, 2021/0 Comments/in Latest News /by admin

Life Lessons: Rights, Responsibilities, and Repercussions. Our life experiences have taught us that although the world is abuzz on rights (being an umbrella on points such as equality, fairness, justice, among others), rights aren’t nearly as important as responsibilities. By definition, “rights”, in our context here means “that which is morally correct”. Responsibility, on the other hand is defined as “being responsible, answerable, or accountable for something or someone”.

Morally, rights should be respected—innately or as commanded by law, tradition, religion, or anything else holding a positive influence on people’s actions. In this world we live in, rights have always come at a cost. Some examples include the right to vote, the right to study, in some cases, even the right to be born, and people from all over the world throughout history have fought for various rights time and time again.

If, in our society, everyone agreed to uphold a standard of responsibility, the rights of others would be protected by those being responsible. Looking at it closely, this is already how society is today—this is, after all, how humans have become civilized; knowing boundaries and respecting others’ rights. However, we have inadvertently built society of people who think “it’s all about me” rather than “it’s about how I treat others.” With the prevalence of social media and other ways to freely express oneself, we can observe how the victim of a bully is now encouraged to whine and complain about being bullied, which often results in more bullying. In a responsible world, the actions of the bully would trigger repercussions from those around and, without the need of the victim to complain, action would be taken to assist the bully to understand that they need to be responsible for the consequences of their unjust behavior. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.

If we ever hope to achieve a fair and equitable society, we need a serious adjustment of how we view ourselves and others, and adopt the mentality that we are responsible for not just ourselves but people around us and should we disrespect rights, there will be repercussions. This applies to so many different situations and is experienced globally: in school, at work, amongst races and ethnicities, between governments, and even in the walls of our own homes.

Rights being trampled is always the result of someone not behaving in a responsible manner. The thought and/or knowledge that there are no consequences can lead to a chain of irresponsible decision making that does not only affect the doer but also those around them. Sadly, because certain repercussions to violating rights aren’t lasting and impactful, negative behaviors continue, and the vicious cycle of irresponsible and hurtful behavior quashing the rights of an individual or a group goes on. Much can be said about an irresponsible character’s character, but if more people in the world take that step to be responsible not just for themselves but for others, we could get one step closer to a kinder and more equal society.

We learn some lessons the hard way, but it doesn’t always have to be like that. With awareness and an open mind, positive and lasting changes can be experienced by everyone.
